- Türkiye not only hosts typical species of the Mediterranean fauna but also of Central and Eastern Europe, the Middle East, the Caucasus, and the Arabian Peninsula. Moreover, compared to European countries, it harbors a significantly higher number of mammal species, indicating that the fauna of Turkey cannot be classified as either typical European or typical Middle Eastern fauna.
- Approximately 1,230 vertebrate species are recognized in Türkiye’s fauna, including 160 mammals, 418 birds, 120 reptiles, 22 amphibians, 127 freshwater fish, and 384 marine fish. However, some of these species are on the verge of extinction, while others are considered endangered.
